  1. Rotary shifter

Operate the rotary shifter in the Subaru Solterra smoothly and with deliberate control to ensure accurate gear selection and system response.

To shift into N (Neutral), press and hold the rotary shifter for a short duration until the system confirms the change.

To engage R (Reverse) or D (Drive), press down on the rotary shifter and rotate it left or right in the direction indicated by the shift position markings.

After each operation, release the rotary shifter so it can return to its neutral resting position, maintaining proper functionality in the Subaru Solterra.

When transitioning between positions such as P to N, D, or R, or switching between D and R, always ensure that the brake pedal is firmly pressed and the vehicle is completely stationary to avoid unintended movement.

  1. Shift position indicator

Meter display: The currently selected shift position in the Subaru Solterra is clearly illuminated for quick driver recognition.

Rotary shifter display: The active gear is also displayed directly on the control interface for added confirmation.

Before proceeding with driving, always verify that the Subaru Solterra is in the correct shift position by checking the illuminated indicator on the instrument cluster.

  1. P position switch

Bring the Subaru Solterra to a complete stop and engage the parking brake before pressing the P position switch to activate Park mode.

Once engaged, the switch will illuminate, confirming that the transmission is securely in the P position.

Always double-check that the shift position indicator displays P before exiting the vehicle to ensure maximum safety.

■ Changing the shift position in each power switch mode

  • The shift position in the Subaru Solterra cannot be changed when the power switch is set to ACC or OFF.
  • When the power switch is in ON mode but the "READY" indicator is not illuminated, only the N position can be selected.
  • Once the "READY" indicator is illuminated, the Subaru Solterra allows shifting from P to D, N, or R as needed.
  • If the "READY" indicator is flashing, the system temporarily restricts shifting out of P. Wait until the indicator becomes steady before operating the rotary shifter again.

■ Shifting the shift position from P to other positions

  • Firmly press the brake pedal before operating the rotary shifter. Attempting to shift without pressing the brake will trigger a warning buzzer and prevent the action in the Subaru Solterra.
  • After selecting a shift position, always confirm the change by checking the instrument cluster display to ensure the Subaru Solterra is in the intended mode before driving.

For optimal driving experience in the Subaru Solterra, develop the habit of smooth and deliberate shift operations, as this not only improves safety but also enhances the longevity of the vehicle’s advanced electronic shift system.

■ The shift position cannot be changed when

Under certain operating conditions in the Subaru Solterra, the system will prevent a shift change and emit an audible buzzer to notify the driver. This built-in safeguard is designed to avoid unintended movement or improper gear engagement. When this occurs, carefully review your current inputs and perform the correct operation before attempting to shift again.

  • When trying to move the shift position from P without pressing the brake pedal in the Subaru Solterra.
  • When attempting to shift out of P while the accelerator pedal is being pressed, which is restricted for safety reasons.
  • When selecting a different shift position from N while the vehicle is stationary or moving at a very low speed without depressing the brake pedal.
  • When attempting to shift from N while stopped or creeping forward with the accelerator pedal pressed.
  • When the P position switch is pressed while the Subaru Solterra is still in motion.

At extremely low speeds, the Subaru Solterra may automatically engage the P position to protect the drivetrain and prevent unintended rolling.

■ The shift position automatically changes to N when

In specific scenarios, the Subaru Solterra will automatically switch the transmission into N (Neutral) and alert the driver with a buzzer. This behavior helps prevent mechanical stress and unsafe driving conditions. Afterward, follow the correct procedure to reselect the desired gear.

Use the appropriate operation to attempt to change the shift position again.

  • When attempting to shift into R while the Subaru Solterra is still moving forward.

At low speeds, the system may allow the shift to R once vehicle motion conditions are deemed safe.

  • When attempting to shift into D while the Subaru Solterra is moving backward.

Similarly, at very low reverse speeds, the system may permit engagement of D once it is safe to do so.

■ When N is selected while driving

If you need to select Neutral while the Subaru Solterra is traveling above a certain speed, maintain pressure on the rotary shifter in the N position until the system confirms the change. This ensures intentional driver input and avoids accidental shifting.

■ Reverse warning buzzer

When shifting into R, the Subaru Solterra emits a distinct audible signal to clearly indicate that Reverse has been engaged, helping improve awareness for both the driver and surrounding environment.

■ Automatic P position selection function

The Subaru Solterra includes an intelligent automatic Park selection feature that enhances safety by engaging P under specific conditions.

  • When the power switch is pressed while the Subaru Solterra is stationary and the system is in ON mode but not in P, the vehicle will automatically shift into P before shutting down.*
  • If the driver’s door is opened while the shift position is not in P and all of the following conditions are met:
    • The Subaru Solterra power switch is in ON mode.
    • The driver is not wearing a seat belt.
    • The brake pedal is not being pressed.

To resume driving after the Subaru Solterra automatically shifts into P, simply operate the rotary shifter again to select the desired position.

  • When the vehicle comes to a complete stop after an emergency shutdown of the EV system during driving.
  • When the voltage level of the Subaru Solterra 12-volt battery drops while the shift position is not in P.

*: If the power switch is pressed at extremely low speeds, such as just before the vehicle fully stops, the Subaru Solterra may automatically shift into P. Always ensure the vehicle is completely stationary before pressing the power switch.

■ If the shift position cannot be shifted from P

If the Subaru Solterra remains stuck in P, there is a possibility that the 12-volt battery is discharged. In such cases, inspect the battery condition and restore proper voltage before attempting further operation.

■ Customization

Depending on vehicle configuration, certain Subaru Solterra system behaviors and settings related to shifting functions may be customizable to better suit driver preferences.

WARNING

■ For the rotary shifter

  • Do not attempt to remove or modify the rotary shifter knob in the Subaru Solterra, and only use genuine SUBARU components. Avoid attaching objects or accessories to the shifter.

Any interference with the rotary shifter may prevent it from returning to its correct position, which could lead to unintended gear engagement and potentially dangerous driving situations.

  • To reduce the risk of accidental gear changes in the Subaru Solterra, avoid touching or operating the rotary shifter unless it is required for driving.

Maintaining proper handling of the Subaru Solterra rotary shifter and understanding its safety logic will significantly improve both driving confidence and system longevity.

■ P position switch

  • Never press the P position switch while the Subaru Solterra is in motion.

If the P position switch is activated at very low speeds (for example, just before the Subaru Solterra comes to a complete stop), the system may immediately engage the P position. This can cause a sudden halt, increasing the risk of an accident or loss of control.

  • To avoid unintended gear changes in the Subaru Solterra, do not touch or press the P position switch unless it is absolutely necessary during normal operation.

NOTICE

■ When exiting the vehicle (driver's seat only)

Before leaving the Subaru Solterra, always confirm that the shift position indicator clearly shows P and that the parking brake indicator is illuminated. This ensures that the vehicle is securely stationary and reduces the risk of unintended movement.

Keeping the shift position in N without activating the automatic P position selection function

  • By following a specific sequence, the Subaru Solterra allows the shift position to remain in N even after the EV system is turned off, bypassing the automatic switch to P.

1. While the EV system of the Subaru Solterra is active, operate the rotary shifter to select N.

2. Allow the rotary shifter to return to its standard neutral position.

3. Once again move the rotary shifter to N and hold it firmly until an audible buzzer confirms the action.

4. Within 5 seconds after the buzzer sounds, press the power switch.

The EV system in the Subaru Solterra will shut down while maintaining the shift position in N*

Ensure that the buzzer is heard and that the message "Holding N Push P Switch When Done" appears on the multi-information display, confirming that the process has been completed correctly.

  • To shift out of N afterward, first press the P position switch to return the Subaru Solterra to the P position, then proceed with the desired gear selection.
  • If this procedure is attempted while the EV system is already stopped, the automatic P position selection override may not function correctly.

Always carry out this sequence while the Subaru Solterra EV system is running to ensure proper behavior.

*: To maintain this condition, avoid operating the power switch again. Repeated presses may cause the Subaru Solterra to automatically shift into P and fully power down.

How to operation the regenerative braking force selection mode

In the Subaru Solterra, regenerative braking can be actively controlled to enhance energy recovery and driving efficiency. By selecting D and using the paddle shift switches, the driver can fix the regenerative braking level when releasing the accelerator pedal.

The Subaru Solterra provides four distinct levels of regenerative braking force, allowing drivers to tailor deceleration characteristics to their driving style or traffic conditions.

Pressing the "-" paddle shift switch increases the regenerative braking force, providing stronger deceleration and greater energy recovery.

Pressing the "+" paddle shift switch reduces the regenerative braking intensity, allowing for smoother coasting and a more relaxed driving feel.

The regenerative braking strength is visually represented on the Subaru Solterra multi-information display. As the number of arrows Subaru Solterra regenerative braking arrows indicator icon of Subaru Solterra regenerative braking level symbol on display (regenerative braking power indicator) increases, the braking force becomes progressively stronger.

■ How to cancel the regenerative braking force selection mode

The regenerative braking force selection mode in the Subaru Solterra will automatically deactivate under certain conditions to ensure optimal system integration and safety.

  • When the shift position is changed from D to another mode.
  • When the "+" paddle shift switch is pressed and held for an extended period.
  • When the Subaru Solterra X-MODE system is activated, prioritizing traction and stability.
  • When the "S PEDAL DRIVE" function is engaged, as it manages deceleration behavior independently.

Understanding how to properly manage regenerative braking in the Subaru Solterra not only improves driving efficiency but also contributes to smoother control and extended driving range.

■ Using regenerative brake

  • When driving the Subaru Solterra at higher speeds, the sensation of deceleration generated by regenerative braking may feel less pronounced compared to traditional internal combustion vehicles. This is a normal characteristic of the Subaru Solterra electric drivetrain and its energy recovery system.
  • If the message "Regenerative Braking Limited Press Brake to Decelerate" appears on the multi-information display of the Subaru Solterra, apply firm pressure to the brake pedal to ensure safe and effective deceleration.
  • By operating the paddle shift switch on the "-" side and increasing the regenerative braking level to 4, the Subaru Solterra will automatically transition into "S PEDAL DRIVE" mode. At the same time, the corresponding "S PEDAL DRIVE" indicator will illuminate to confirm activation.

"S PEDAL DRIVE" switch

In the Subaru Solterra, the "S PEDAL DRIVE" function allows the driver to control both acceleration and deceleration primarily using the accelerator pedal. This advanced feature significantly reduces the need to switch between the accelerator and brake pedals, improving driving comfort, especially in urban environments.

Because deceleration is stronger than in conventional vehicles when the accelerator pedal is released, the Subaru Solterra can be slowed down smoothly by gradually easing off the pedal rather than lifting your foot completely. This enables a more controlled and refined driving experience.

Subaru Solterra S Pedal Drive switch location and control illustration

When the "S PEDAL DRIVE" switch is pressed, the regenerative braking force applied when releasing the accelerator becomes noticeably stronger than under standard driving conditions, enhancing energy recovery and reducing brake wear in the Subaru Solterra.

■ When "S PEDAL DRIVE" cannot be used

There are certain situations where the Subaru Solterra will temporarily disable the "S PEDAL DRIVE" system to maintain safety and system integrity.

  • When the Subaru Solterra X-MODE system is activated, prioritizing traction on challenging surfaces.
  • When a malfunction is detected in the brake system or EV system.
  • When regenerative braking capability is restricted due to system limitations.

Regenerative braking performance in the Subaru Solterra may be limited under specific conditions, such as when the electric motor or power control unit reaches excessively high temperatures. In these cases, system protection takes priority over energy recovery.

■ Regenerative Braking

  • The Subaru Solterra cannot be brought to a complete stop solely by releasing the accelerator pedal. Always use the brake pedal when bringing the vehicle to a full stop.
  • If the power switch is turned off and the EV system is restarted, the "S PEDAL DRIVE" function will automatically be deactivated and must be reselected if desired.
  • At higher speeds, the deceleration effect of regenerative braking in the Subaru Solterra becomes less noticeable compared to low-speed driving.
  • The maximum deceleration force varies depending on vehicle speed and driving conditions.
  • The level of regenerative braking may fluctuate based on the condition and charge level of the Subaru Solterra traction battery.

Regenerative braking strength in the Subaru Solterra may decrease when the traction battery is fully charged or when battery temperature is low. This limitation can be monitored through the charging area display or regeneration limit indicator on the power meter. If you notice reduced deceleration, apply the brake pedal to maintain safe control of the vehicle.

  • "S PEDAL DRIVE" cannot be used when one of the following messages is displayed on the Subaru Solterra multi-information display.

In such cases, always press the brake pedal firmly to decelerate safely.

    • "S PEDAL DRIVE Unavailable XMODE Activated"
    • "S PEDAL DRIVE Temporarily Unavailable Press Brake to Decelerate"
    • "S PEDAL DRIVE Temporarily Unavailable See Owner's Manual"

■ Stop lights turning ON

When the regenerative braking force in the Subaru Solterra exceeds a certain threshold, the stop lights will automatically illuminate to alert following drivers, enhancing overall road safety.

Efficient use of regenerative braking and "S PEDAL DRIVE" in the Subaru Solterra not only improves driving smoothness but also contributes to maximizing electric range and reducing mechanical brake wear over time.
