If the 12-volt battery is discharged

If the 12-volt battery in your Subaru Solterra becomes discharged, specific procedures can be followed to restore power and restart the EV system safely. These steps are designed to help you regain functionality in emergency situations without causing damage to the vehicle’s electrical systems.

If needed, you may also contact an authorized SUBARU dealer or a qualified service center for professional assistance with your Subaru Solterra.

Restarting the EV system

If you have access to jumper (booster) cables and another vehicle equipped with a 12-volt battery, the Subaru Solterra can be restarted by carefully following the procedure below.

1. Ensure that the electronic key for the Subaru Solterra is inside the vehicle or within detection range.

Be aware that when connecting jumper cables, the vehicle’s security system may activate, and the doors may automatically lock depending on the situation.

2. Open the hood of the Subaru Solterra.

3. Access the positive (+) battery terminal and open its protective cover.

Press the retaining clip and lift the cover as illustrated.

4. Connect the jumper cables in the correct sequence: attach the positive cable clamp to point A on the Subaru Solterra, then connect the other end to point B on the assisting vehicle. Next, attach the negative clamp to point C on the assisting vehicle and connect the remaining end to point D (a designated metal grounding point) on the Subaru Solterra.

Always use jumper cables of sufficient length to safely reach the designated terminals and grounding point.

5. Start the engine of the assisting vehicle and slightly increase its engine speed. Maintain this condition for approximately 5 minutes to allow the Subaru Solterra 12-volt battery to recharge.

6. With the power switch OFF, open and close any door of the Subaru Solterra once.

7. While keeping the assisting vehicle running, attempt to start the Subaru Solterra by switching the power mode to ON.

8. Verify that the "READY" indicator appears on the display. If it does not illuminate, contact your SUBARU dealer immediately.

9. After the Subaru Solterra EV system has started, disconnect the jumper cables in the exact reverse order of connection to prevent electrical damage.

10. Close the positive (+) battery terminal cover securely.

Once the Subaru Solterra is operational, it is strongly recommended to have the vehicle inspected by a SUBARU dealer to ensure the battery and electrical systems are functioning correctly.

■ Starting the EV system when the 12-volt battery is discharged

The Subaru Solterra cannot be started by push-starting due to its electric drivetrain design.

■ To prevent 12-volt battery discharge

  • Turn off all electrical systems such as headlights, climate control, and audio when the Subaru Solterra EV system is not in operation.
  • Avoid prolonged use of electrical components at low speeds or during extended idling in traffic, as this may drain the 12-volt battery.

■ Charging the 12-volt battery

The 12-volt battery in the Subaru Solterra gradually loses charge over time, even when the vehicle is not in use, due to natural discharge and background electrical consumption.

If the Subaru Solterra is left unused for an extended period, the battery may become depleted, preventing the EV system from starting. The battery is automatically recharged during normal vehicle operation.

■ When the 12-volt battery is removed or discharged

  • Stored data in the vehicle’s ECU may be reset. After a full discharge, it is recommended to have the Subaru Solterra inspected by a SUBARU dealer.
  • In some cases, the smart key system may not function when the battery is discharged. Use the mechanical key or wireless remote to access the Subaru Solterra.
  • The Subaru Solterra EV system may not start on the first attempt after recharging but typically resumes normal operation on a subsequent attempt.

This condition in the Subaru Solterra should not be interpreted as a malfunction and does not indicate a defect in the vehicle systems.

  • The Subaru Solterra stores the last selected power switch mode in its system memory. When the 12-volt battery is reconnected, the system automatically restores the previously active mode. Before disconnecting the 12-volt battery, always ensure that the power switch is turned completely off.

If you are unsure which mode the Subaru Solterra was in prior to battery discharge, proceed with extra caution when reconnecting the battery to avoid unexpected system behavior.

  • If the 12-volt battery in the Subaru Solterra becomes fully discharged, shifting out of the current gear position may not be possible. In such a case, the vehicle cannot be towed conventionally, as the front wheels may remain locked. Proper towing requires lifting the front wheels.
  • If equipped, the power back door of the Subaru Solterra must be reinitialized after battery reconnection to restore full automatic functionality.

    ■ When replacing the 12-volt battery

    • Always install a 12-volt battery in the Subaru Solterra that complies with European standards and specifications.
    • Select a battery that matches the original specifications: identical case size (LN1), a 20-hour capacity rating (20HR) of at least 45Ah, and a cold cranking amperage (CCA) rating of 286A or higher.
      • If the battery dimensions differ, it may not be securely mounted within the Subaru Solterra battery compartment.
      • Using a battery that does not meet the required specifications can reduce performance and may prevent the Subaru Solterra EV system from starting properly.
      • If the 20-hour capacity is insufficient, even short periods of inactivity may result in battery discharge and starting issues.

For precise specifications and compatibility details, consult your SUBARU dealer regarding your Subaru Solterra.

    WARNING

    ■ When removing the 12-volt battery terminals

Always disconnect the negative (-) terminal first when working on the Subaru Solterra battery. If the positive (+) terminal comes into contact with metal components during removal, sparks may occur, which could result in fire, electric shock, or serious injury.

    ■ Avoiding 12-volt battery fires or explosions

Follow these safety precautions to prevent ignition of flammable gases emitted by the Subaru Solterra 12-volt battery:

    • Ensure that each jumper cable is correctly connected to its designated terminal and does not accidentally touch other metal parts.
    • Prevent the free end of the positive (+) cable from contacting any metal surfaces such as brackets or unpainted areas.
    • Never allow the positive and negative clamps of the jumper cables to touch each other.
    • Keep open flames, sparks, and smoking materials away from the Subaru Solterra battery at all times.

    ■ 12-volt battery precautions

The Subaru Solterra 12-volt battery contains corrosive acid and hazardous materials, including lead compounds. Improper handling can result in serious injury or damage.

Observe the following precautions when handling the battery:

    • Always wear protective eyewear and avoid contact between battery acid and skin, clothing, or vehicle surfaces.
    • Do not lean directly over the Subaru Solterra battery while working on it.
    • If battery fluid contacts skin or eyes, rinse immediately with clean water and seek medical attention without delay.

Keep the affected area covered with a damp cloth until professional medical help is available.

    • After handling the Subaru Solterra battery, wash your hands thoroughly to remove any residual contaminants.
    • Ensure that children are kept away from the battery and related components at all times.

    ■ When replacing the 12-volt battery

    • If the battery vent plug is positioned too close to the hold-down clamp, leakage of electrolyte may occur.
    • For safe and correct replacement procedures for the Subaru Solterra battery, always consult an authorized SUBARU dealer.
