SUBARU SOLTERRA OWNER’S MANUAL

Front passenger occupant classification system

2023–2026 manual reference · Features may vary by model and market.

The Subaru Solterra is equipped with an advanced front passenger occupant classification system that continuously monitors the status of the front passenger seat. Based on detected conditions, this intelligent system automatically activates or deactivates specific SRS airbags to optimize safety.

  • SRS front passenger airbag
  • SRS front passenger knee airbag

This system plays a critical role in ensuring that the Subaru Solterra adapts its safety response depending on whether the seat is occupied by an adult, child, or remains empty.

*1:The Subaru Solterra system identifies occupants of adult size as adults. However, individuals with smaller body frames may sometimes not be recognized correctly depending on posture and seating position.
*2:Applies when the front passenger is wearing a seat belt.
*3:Applies when the front passenger is not wearing a seat belt.
*4:For certain children, including those in booster seats or convertible seats, the system may not always correctly identify them as children due to differences in size or posture.
*5:Never install a rear-facing child restraint system on the front passenger seat of the Subaru Solterra. A forward-facing system should only be used when absolutely necessary and must be installed according to proper procedures.
*6:If the indicator lights do not behave as expected, consult the manual for proper installation and usage instructions.

WARNING

■ Front passenger occupant classification system precautions

Strictly follow these precautions when using the occupant classification system in your Subaru Solterra.

Failure to do so may result in serious injury or fatal consequences.

  • Always wear the seat belt correctly when seated in the front passenger seat.
  • Ensure that the seat belt latch plate is not already inserted into the buckle before a passenger sits down, as this may interfere with accurate detection.
  • When using a seat belt extender, confirm that the "AIR BAG ON" indicator is illuminated. If the "AIR BAG OFF" light is on, disconnect and reconnect the seat belt correctly before reattaching the extender. Using the extender incorrectly may prevent the airbags from deploying in a Subaru Solterra collision scenario.
  • Avoid placing heavy objects on the front passenger seat or in the seatback pocket, as this may interfere with the weight sensors.
  • Do not apply pressure to the front passenger seat from the rear seats using hands or feet, as this can affect sensor readings.
  • Rear passengers should not push or lift the front passenger seat using their legs or feet.
  • Do not place any objects underneath the front passenger seat in the Subaru Solterra.
  • Avoid reclining the front passenger seatback excessively until it contacts the rear seat, as this may trigger the "AIR BAG OFF" indicator and deactivate the airbag system.

Keep the seatback in an upright position during vehicle operation to ensure proper seat belt effectiveness and accurate system detection.

Excessive reclining may reduce the protective function of the seat belt system.

  • When an adult is seated, the "AIR BAG ON" indicator should illuminate. If the "AIR BAG OFF" indicator remains on, instruct the passenger to sit upright, position themselves fully back in the seat, place their feet on the floor, and fasten the seat belt correctly.

If the issue persists, it is recommended that the passenger move to a rear seat or adjust the front passenger seat further backward in the Subaru Solterra.

  • If a forward-facing child restraint system must be installed in the front passenger seat, ensure it is installed correctly according to the manufacturer’s instructions.
  • Do not modify, remove, or alter the front seats of your Subaru Solterra, as this may affect system accuracy.
  • Avoid kicking or applying strong impact to the front passenger seat, as this may trigger a malfunction warning in the classification system. If this occurs, contact your SUBARU dealer immediately.
  • Child restraint systems installed in the rear seat should not press against the front seatback.
  • Do not use seat accessories such as cushions or covers that interfere with the seat surface where sensors are located.
  • Do not modify or replace the upholstery of the front passenger seat, as this may compromise the proper functioning of the Subaru Solterra occupant detection system.

Additional safety insight: The intelligent occupant classification system in the Subaru Solterra ensures that airbag deployment is tailored to real-time conditions, providing a higher level of protection when used correctly and maintained in its original factory configuration.
