Charging methods

The Subaru Solterra supports multiple charging methods designed to suit different driving needs and charging environments, allowing drivers to efficiently replenish the traction battery in a variety of situations.

Types of charging methods

■ AC charging

AC charging is the most commonly used method for the Subaru Solterra and is performed using a standard AC outlet or a dedicated AC charging station in combination with the AC charging cable.

This method is particularly suitable for daily charging at home or work, where longer charging times are acceptable. The Subaru Solterra also allows users to configure a charging schedule, enabling charging to occur automatically at preferred times, such as during off-peak electricity hours for improved cost efficiency.

■ DC charging

DC fast charging is an advanced charging method for the Subaru Solterra that uses high-power DC chargers compliant with SAE J1772 standards.

This method allows the traction battery to be charged significantly faster compared to AC charging, making it ideal for long-distance travel or situations where quick recharging is required.

SAE refers to the Society of Automotive Engineers, an organization that establishes widely recognized industry standards for automotive technologies.

Charging-linked functions

The Subaru Solterra is equipped with a range of intelligent features that operate in conjunction with the charging system to improve comfort, efficiency, and battery protection.

■ My Room Mode

When the Subaru Solterra is connected to an external power source via the charging cable, My Room Mode allows occupants to use onboard systems such as the air conditioning and audio system without relying solely on the traction battery.

This feature effectively transforms the Subaru Solterra into a comfortable stationary space powered by external electricity.

*: Depending on operating conditions, some energy may still be drawn from the traction battery.

■ Traction battery heater

In cold weather conditions, when the Subaru Solterra is connected to a charging cable, the traction battery heater automatically activates to warm the battery to an optimal temperature.

This helps maintain charging efficiency and ensures proper battery performance in low-temperature environments.

  • The heating function automatically stops when the charging cable is disconnected or after approximately three days of continuous connection.
  • When using scheduled charging, the heater operates in coordination with the programmed charging start time.

■ Traction battery warming control

After the traction battery heater stops following prolonged connection, the Subaru Solterra activates an additional thermal management feature known as traction battery warming control.

This system provides insulation and temperature stabilization for the battery in extremely cold conditions, helping to preserve battery health and readiness.

  • This function will automatically stop after approximately 31 days, even if the charging cable remains connected.
  • When this system is active, charging schedule settings may be overridden and charging may begin automatically to protect the battery.

■ Traction battery cooler

When the traction battery temperature becomes elevated—such as after extended high-speed driving or during DC fast charging—the Subaru Solterra automatically activates the battery cooling system.

This cooling function helps regulate battery temperature, preventing overheating and maintaining optimal performance and longevity.

The system may operate during demanding conditions, including highway driving or repeated DC charging sessions, ensuring that the Subaru Solterra continues to function safely and efficiently.

Understanding these charging methods and integrated thermal management systems allows Subaru Solterra drivers to maximize battery performance, extend driving range, and maintain long-term reliability.

■ Traction battery heater

  • The traction battery heater in the Subaru Solterra may activate automatically even when the vehicle is not actively charging, depending on environmental conditions such as low outside temperatures.
  • When the traction battery heater is operating, the charging indicator on the Subaru Solterra will illuminate, providing a visual confirmation that the system is actively managing battery temperature.
  • If the traction battery heater operates while charging is in progress, the total charging time for the Subaru Solterra may be extended beyond normal expectations, as part of the energy is used for thermal conditioning.
  • Because the heater consumes energy, the overall charge level of the traction battery may decrease during operation. In such cases, it may be necessary to recharge the Subaru Solterra again to restore sufficient driving range.

■ Traction battery cooler

  • For AC charging, the Subaru Solterra allows users to customize traction battery cooler settings directly through the multi-information display for improved thermal management.
  • The charging indicator remains illuminated when the traction battery cooler is either on standby or actively cooling the battery.
  • If the traction battery charge level is too low, the cooling system may not operate even if the battery temperature is elevated, as the Subaru Solterra prioritizes preserving essential energy for vehicle operation.
  • While the traction battery cooler is running, cooling will automatically stop if any of the following conditions occur:
    • The hood is opened
    • The power switch is turned to ACC or ON
    • The shift position is changed from P to another position
    • The Remote Air Conditioning System is activated
    • The remaining charge of the traction battery drops below a specified threshold
  • The traction battery cooler in the Subaru Solterra operates using energy from both the traction battery and, when available, an external power source:
    • During operation, the battery charge level may fluctuate within a certain range rather than steadily increasing as it would during standard AC charging.
    • When the cooling system is active, some charging stations may interpret this as active charging. As a result, usage fees may apply even though the primary function is temperature control rather than energy replenishment.

■ Changing of the traction battery cooler setting

Settings for the traction battery cooler in the Subaru Solterra can be adjusted Subaru Solterra battery cooler settings menu on multi information display on the multi-information display.

Using the meter control switches, navigate through the menu by selecting "Vehicle Settings", then "Charging Settings", followed by "Battery Cooler", and adjust the desired configuration according to your driving and charging preferences.

If the traction battery cooler is turned off, the Subaru Solterra may limit battery output under certain driving conditions to protect the battery from overheating.

Understanding and properly configuring these thermal management features helps Subaru Solterra owners maintain optimal battery health, improve charging efficiency, and ensure consistent performance across various environmental conditions.
